MARK M. MCCLOY SCHOLARHIP

THE HISTORY

On March 18, 2006, four members of the Theta Theta chapter, as well as one of the member’s girlfriends, were returning from Colorado from a Spring Break trip, when their car was struck by a drunk driver near Underwood, IA. Tragically, the President at the time, Mark M. McCloy, along with Brooke Walton, the girlfriend of David Hartwig, were killed in the accident. Fraternity Brothers David Hartwig, Chris Wallner, and Paul Dornbier survived the accident, but not without injury.

Chris Wallner spent 35 days in Intensive Care at Creighton Memorial Hospital in Omaha, NE with serious injuries from the accident. Today, Brother Wallner is in good health after several follow up surgeries, and works with Chase Financial in the Chicago area today.

David Hartwig spent 11 days at Creighton Memorial Hospital with a shattered hip, knee, and broken lumbar bones in his back. He was told by doctors that he would never walk again. After 11 days in Omaha, NE, Hartwig was flown to Colorado, where he spent 14 days at Mapleton Rehabilitation Clinic. After those 14 days, Hartwig was released walking with crutches, and after two and a half months, Hartwig was walking without the assistance of crutches.

Paul Dornbier sustained broken ribs, and a concussion as a result of the accident. He was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, where he was released the day after the accident. Dornbier had to struggle with returning to the University of Iowa for the remainder of the Spring Semester in 2006. Dornbier made a full recovery, and is now working in Chicago, IL.
